Hovan's rave
Test renders & storyboard
Script for introductory film Hovan’s Rave
We open on the somewhat eerie interior of an empty warehouse. A confused voice speaks to us:
VO: What the..? What is this?
At first glance it looks like a blurry camera shot, but visual glitches give away that at least some of the photorealistic footage has been generated by a computer. Is this even reality?
The camera pans through the building, which seems to have been abandoned, as there is graffiti on the walls. We end up looking at an odd object, floating in the corner of the room:
VO: And what are we looking at here?
A white ceiling light switches on, illuminating the shape from the top. It casts a shadow on the floor that clearly looks like an ‘A’. Murmur sounds of a shuffling crowd and an echo effect are added to the voice, as if our narrator is in the main hall of a museum.
VO: Is it an Art installation?
The white light is replaced by a yellow spotlight from the side of the shape, casting a P-shaped shadow on the wall. Our murmuring crowd bursts into applause and the occasional “bravo”.
VO: Is it a Performance?
While the spotlight turns off, a fat beat is layered over the audience sound with a green strobe light pulsating to the rhythm of the beat from the remaining side of the object. The flashing shadow clearly spells an ‘R’. The crowd starts cheering.
VO: Is it a Rave?
All lights switch on at the same time and all the letters are visible. The sound comes to a crescendo.
VO: You see, it’s all of these things, at the same time.
The object starts spinning and becomes a beautifully illuminated round shape, reminiscent of a crystal ball, suggesting that we are looking into the future. In it, we see the mysterious reflection of a person. We can only assume that we are looking at Hovan, or at one of his ‘disciples’.
VO: Shall we let Hovan do his things?
